Inky Johnson Shares Lessons on Adversity, Leadership, and Purpose at Summit Sportsplex

Inky Johnson to over 500 students at Summit Sportsplex

On September 8, more than 500 local students gathered at Summit Sportsplex to hear from entrepreneur and internationally recognized speaker Inky Johnson for Process Over Product, a conversation about perseverance, accountability, leadership, and finding purpose through adversity.

Johnson knows that lesson firsthand.

As a defensive back at the University of Tennessee, Johnson was pursuing his dream of playing professional football when a life-threatening injury permanently paralyzed his right arm. In an instant, the future he had spent years working toward changed.

Rather than allowing that moment to define what came next, Johnson found a new purpose in helping others navigate adversity and become stronger through it.

His message to students at Summit challenged them to think beyond accomplishments and ask a bigger question: Who are you becoming in the process?

Roanoke City Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Verletta White joined Johnson for the event, reinforcing the importance of giving students practical tools to work through adversity and make intentional choices about how they respond to difficult circumstances.

Johnson’s story gets to the heart of why Summit exists.

Our goal isn’t simply to create better athletes. We want young people throughout Roanoke to have access to experiences, mentors, and lessons that develop character, commitment, courage, confidence, and compassion.

Sometimes those lessons happen during a game. Sometimes they come from hearing someone share what happened when the game was suddenly taken away.

We’re grateful to Inky Johnson for sharing his story with Roanoke’s students and reminding all of us that success isn’t only about what you achieve. It’s also about who you become along the way.
