Troy Daniels Dream Big Weekend Brings 156 Young Athletes to Summit Sportsplex

On August 1 and 2, Summit Sportsplex welcomed former NBA player and 2020 NBA Champion Troy Daniels for the eighth annual Dream Big Basketball Camp.
The free camp brought 156 young athletes from more than 50 schools together for two days of basketball, mentorship, and fun. Campers came from throughout the Roanoke Valley, with some families traveling from as far away as North Carolina, New Jersey, Alabama, and even Canada.
Throughout the weekend, athletes worked on fundamentals, ball handling, shooting, teamwork, and other skills designed to help them grow on the court. From seven-year-olds picking up a basketball for the first time to experienced teenage players sharpening their game, there was a place for everyone.
But Dream Big Weekend was about much more than basketball.
Daniels spent time with campers throughout the event, encouraging them, working alongside them, and sharing the lessons that helped him reach the NBA. As Daniels told WSLS 10, being present and giving young athletes his time is an important part of the camp. He wants kids to have fun, learn to work together, and experience everything the game can teach them.

Every camper participated at no cost to their family and left with new skills, new friends, and a swag bag to remember the weekend.
This was the first year Dream Big Basketball Camp was held at Summit Sportsplex, and the partnership was a natural fit with our mission.
Summit exists to make sports, mentorship, and positive experiences more accessible to young people. That means opening our facility to people and organizations doing meaningful work for youth throughout our community.
Dream Big Weekend was a great example of what can happen when those doors are opened.
We’re grateful to Troy Daniels, the Dream Big team, the volunteers, families, and everyone else who helped bring an incredible weekend to Roanoke. We look forward to creating even more opportunities for young people to play, grow, connect, and dream big.
